The United Nation’s international campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, takes place each year from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10 December (International Human Rights Day) – a global campaign for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. In Western Australia, this event marks the beginning of the WA Government’s 16 Days in WA campaign.

The March Against Domestic and Family Violence is held during 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. It brings together the families of victim-survivors, the community, dedicated specialist services, government representatives, and a growing number of corporate supporters to honour the women and children who have been killed due to family and domestic violence and show support to those who still live in constant fear in their own homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the 34th March Against Domestic and Family Violence?

Forrest Chase, St Georges Terrace, Perth Western Australia 6831.

Who should come to the March?

EVERYONE! Family and domestic violence exists in every corner of our community.

The March is an opportunity to honour the women and children who have been killed by family and domestic violence and to show support to those who still live in constant fear.

If you work in Perth City, we encourage you to join us during your break to attend the Rally (10:45am – 12:00pm), and or the March (12:00pm – 1:00pm).

How can I get there?

Weekday parking in the City of Perth can be limited so we recommend public transport.

If you are driving, this map shows multi-level parking off Roe Street, Perth, with pedestrian bridge access to Forrest Chase.

What will happen at the March?

10:00am to 10:45am – 30 Family and domestic violence sector specialist services stalls are open to the public to acquire information about available support, for themselves or others. The services include, but are not limited to, crisis response, refuge accommodation, financial hardship, women’s community legal support, women’s community-based health, refuge and migrant women services, and support for alcohol and other drugs.

10:45pm to 11:45pm – Attendees sit or stand, quietly, for the ‘Rally’. This component of the Event provides an opportunity to hear from leaders in the family and domestic violence space, including Experts by Experience, the sector, the WA Police Force, and the State Government. A memorial will also be held to honour and recognise every life stolen by family and domestic violence.

During the Rally, we ask that you stay silent and encourage others to do the same.

12:00pm-1:00pm: We march through the open-air malls of Perth City. See the March route here. We respect that not all attendees are comfortable chanting throughout the March. For this reason, we ask that those wishing to participate, make their way to the front of the procession. We also encourage ‘chanters’ to collect a free cap from the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing stall that supports our ‘Believe’ campaign. Please follow the guidance of the March leaders for what to chant.

What should I wear?

If possible, we encourage you to wear orange or purple coloured clothing.

Orange is the international colour to end gender-based violence. Purple is the campaign colour to end family and domestic violence.

If orange or purple aren’t an option, CWSW invites you to wear black in support of our ‘Believe’ campaign.  Limited caps will be available from the CWSW stall for attendees interested in participating in chanting throughout the March.

What should I bring?

The day of the March is often a very hot day, so please consider bringing a bottle of water, wearing sunscreen and a hat. Comfortable shoes are also a must.

If you’re interested in participating in chanting during the March, you are welcome to make your way to the CWSW stall to collect a ‘Believe’ campaign cap. Numbers are limited.

CWSW welcomes signs and banners. However, anything with metal is not permitted. Handheld signs will also be distributed prior to the March starting. Please feel free to collect one from our staff and return it to the CWSW stall once the March has ended.

Where are the nearest toilets?
