This program is for Aboriginal male offenders to address Family and Domestic Violence within a culturally appropriate and sensitive environment. The program currently runs at Acacia Prison and is administered from Outcare’s East Perth office.
What is the Family Violence program?
Counselling is provided during the program with six one on one confidential and culturally sensitive counselling sessions to support the program. The program also provides the opportunity to engage in further counselling post release to re-fresh skills and knowledge and to apply them effectively in a non-custodial setting.
The program is a Men’s Behaviour Change Program created specifically to be culturally appropriate and sensitive to the needs and issues faced by Aboriginal men and their families. The program is comprised of 24 sessions conducted over twelve weeks. It is a safe and supportive environment for participants to explore their relationship with family, culture and community. Individuals are encouraged to reflect on and take responsibility for their past and/or current behaviours and to be accountable for their choices. The program aims to support individuals to move toward living a non-abusive lifestyle, this is facilitated by developing tools and strategies aligned with traditional and cultural values.
Case management support is provided three months pre- release and up to 24 months post release. This is to support with transitioning back into the community and family using a holistic approach. This is a unique opportunity and is based on a ‘throughcare’ model of continued support within prison as well once released into the community.
At Acacia Prison referrals are made by the Coordinator Indigenous Initiatives team. At all other prisons referrals are made by transitional managers. If you would like to be considered, speak to someone on the team at the prison.
