We were pleased to host a workshop in partnership with the Sexual Assault Legal Service WA on protected communications and counselling records during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
This important workshop delved into the current protected for sexual assault counselling records under the WA Evidence Act, explored how to respond to subpoenas and worked through several case studies. We were greatly appreciative of all the experts who gave their time and knowledge to the workshop including; Natalie Jackson (WA Police), Philippa Schrape (Office of the Commissioner for Victims of Crime), Olivia Tan (Sexual Assault Legal Service WA) and Liam Nicholls.
For those who missed the opportunity, you can find a recording of the workshop below. Due to some technical issues the powerpoint did not move at times with the recording. A copy of the slides is provided below as well.
For us this is just the first step of what we hope will lead to further work to increase the understanding around sensitive records for victim-survivors and the legal system.
